# What a lab equipment distributor website needs to win local buyers

A lab equipment distributor's website has to explain what the manufacturer cannot. Which brands and models you carry locally, what stock and field service are nearby, who handles installation and qualification, and who the customer calls when the instrument stops. If the site just copies the manufacturer's product pages, it competes with the manufacturer's own website and loses.

## What buyers look for on a distributor's website

Someone landing on a distributor's site usually knows which instrument they want, or at least what type. It could be a university lab manager, a hospital purchasing officer or a process engineer at a pharma company. They have read the specifications on the manufacturer's website. They come to yours to confirm that you can sell it to them, when it will arrive and who will support them afterwards.

That is why the questions your site must answer are very local. Whether you hold the brand for the whole country or one region, whether demo units are available, how long a spare part takes, whether you handle installation and IQ and OQ documentation, and whether you can bid in a public tender for a university or a hospital.

## Brand pages that do not copy the manufacturer's text

The easy route is to copy each product description from the manufacturer's website. It is often what other distributors of the same brand do too. Among its helpful content criteria, Google asks whether content that draws on other sources avoids simply copying or rewriting them and adds substantial value and originality. A copied datasheet adds none.

Each brand page should explain what you add. Which models you hold in stock or as demo units, which compatible consumables and accessories you supply, which engineer knows the instrument and what kinds of labs you have installed it in. Technical data can link to the manufacturer's official datasheet, which is the reference whenever something changes.

### Can we use the manufacturer's photos and datasheets on our website?

It depends on your distribution agreement and what the manufacturer allows. You can often use the official material they provide, but the whole page should not be made of it. Add your own photos of demo units or your service team, and copy that explains what you bring that the manufacturer does not.

## Navigation by application alongside navigation by brand

Researchers tend to search for a way to get a task done, while purchasing and engineering search by brand and model. Your site has to serve both paths. An application menu leads to the instruments from each brand that fit, and a brand menu leads to the full catalogue. Both routes end on the same product page, with no duplicate pages.

- Cell culture, with CO2 incubators, biosafety cabinets and benchtop bioreactors.
- Fermentation and bioprocessing, with lab and pilot scale bioreactors and their controllers.
- Filtration and purification, with TFF systems and single-use consumables.
- Sample preparation, with centrifuges, balances and shakers.

## Stock, field service and qualification, what the manufacturer cannot say for you

Service is often what sets one distributor apart from another selling the same brand. Show it with specific pages. Who your service engineers are and where they are based, which brands they can repair, whether you offer preventive maintenance and calibration contracts, and how to request a visit. If you keep spare parts or consumables in stock, say which ones and where.

For pharma customers and GMP production sites, qualification matters a great deal. If you handle installation and support IQ and OQ, or work with the manufacturer on FAT and SAT, explain what you do and what the manufacturer does. A buyer writing a URS wants to know who they will be dealing with at each step.

### Is an online shop worth it for a lab equipment distributor?

For consumables, spare parts and small instruments with fixed prices, yes, because lab customers reorder often and want it to be quick. For bioreactors, TFF systems or equipment configured from a URS, a page with a quote request makes more sense. Both can carry product structured data, each using the type that fits.

## How to rank next to the manufacturer's own website

When someone searches for a model name, the manufacturer's site usually comes first, and that is fine. Distributors win the searches where location matters. A brand distributor in Spain, field service for a type of instrument in Barcelona or Madrid, spare parts or calibration nearby. Those pages need to state the territory, the brand and the service in the words your customers use.

A Google Business Profile helps here. Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and popularity, and that links to your business and reviews count. For products, Google offers two types of structured data. Product snippets for pages where people cannot buy directly, and merchant listings for pages where they can.

### How do we stand out from other distributors of the same brand?

Through what happens after the sale and how well you know your customers' applications. Local field service, local stock, engineers trained by the brand and support with qualification. Show it on specific pages and, where a customer agrees, with a real case. The datasheet, on the other hand, is the same for everyone.

## What the manufacturer can restrict on your website

Distribution agreements usually set rules on the use of the brand, logos and photos, and sometimes on online advertising. Read yours before building the site. If the manufacturer has an image and copy library for distributors, ask for it and use it as a starting point, without letting it become the only content on the page.

EU law sets a limit here. Article 4(e) of Regulation (EU) 2022/720 on vertical agreements lists preventing the distributor or its customers from effectively using the internet to sell among the hardcore restrictions. The manufacturer can still impose other restrictions on online sales, and on online advertising as long as they do not aim to block an entire advertising channel. If in doubt, ask a competition lawyer.
