# White paper, application note or webinar for technical lead generation

It depends on where the buyer is. An application note, with method and data, is what people evaluating equipment ask for, and it is best left open or nearly open. A white paper helps while the customer is still defining the problem, such as single-use versus stainless steel. A webinar starts a conversation with an expert and is where asking for contact details makes most sense.

## Which format to start with

### Application note

If your buyers already compare systems and you have your own data from a specific application. Keep it open, or at least the summary, and track who reads it.

### White paper or webinar

If your customers are still defining the problem or you want to reach new profiles. This is where asking for details and automated follow-up make sense.

## What each format is and what readers expect from it

An application note shows how a specific application was solved with a piece of equipment. For example, a CHO cell culture in a 50 litre bioreactor or concentrating a protein with a TFF system. It covers method, conditions and results, and readers use it to check whether their own process fits.

A white paper argues a point about a broader problem, such as when switching to single-use pays off or what to prepare before scaling up to a pilot plant. A webinar is a live session with an expert and audience questions, recorded for later. Each format takes different work and attracts a different reader.

## Which format fits each stage of the purchase

Buying bioprocess equipment has three clear stages. First the customer defines the problem, then evaluates systems and suppliers, and finally has to convince quality, engineering and procurement. Each format works best at one of these stages, as the table shows.

How the three formats compare for technical lead generation

| Criterion | White paper | Application note | Webinar |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Buying stage | Defining the problem | Evaluating systems | Between problem and evaluation |
| What the reader wants | Criteria to decide | Method, data and results | An expert to answer questions |
| Who should prepare it | Marketing with engineering | The applications lab | An application specialist |
| Ask for details | Yes, with a short form | Better open or with an open summary | Yes, to register |
| Follow-up | Related content before a call | A call if the profile fits | Recording and a meeting proposal |

### Should application notes be gated?

Not always. If the note is short and the data is what convinces, leave it open or gate only the full PDF, with the summary and key data on the page. More people read it, search engines can index it, and the form is saved for longer documents or the webinar.

## What scientists actually download

A scientist or process engineer will not download a brochure with a new cover. They want data they can compare with their own. Growth curves, culture conditions, filtration performance, scale-up steps from lab to pilot plant and the protocol that was followed.

That data comes from your applications lab or from customer projects. If it belongs to a customer, you need their written permission and often have to anonymise it. Everything goes through engineering before publication, because an inflated figure in an application note gets found out at the first trial.

- Method and conditions, so the reader can repeat the test.
- Results with units and scale, not charts without axes.
- The limits and what was not tested.
- Who did the work and how to reach them.

## What is worth putting behind a form

Asking for details has a cost, because a scientist who only wanted to check a protocol may leave without reading it. A practical rule is to gate what is long and decision-grade, such as a white paper or webinar registration, and leave the application note open, or at least its summary with the key data.

Open content also helps people find you. Google recommends making important content available as text, and a PDF that only opens after a form does not help. A page with the summary, the key data and the full PDF one click away works for search engines, for AI answers and for the reader.

### Live or recorded webinar?

Live, the value is the conversation. Audience questions show what worries customers and give you ideas for the next application notes. The recording can go to people who could not attend and works as on-demand content. The practical choice is to run it live and publish the recording afterwards behind a registration form.

## How to tell which format brings real leads

In Google Analytics 4, any event can be marked as a key event. Mark each document download, form submission and webinar registration, and you will see which channels drive those actions. But a download is not a sale. You need to match it against your CRM to see which contacts turn into real opportunities.

To put content in front of the right people, LinkedIn lets you target by job title, company or industry, run campaigns to a list of named accounts and retarget people who have already engaged with your brand. A webinar on bioreactor scale-up makes more sense in front of process leads at CDMOs and biotechs than the whole industry.

### Can we use a customer's data?

Only with their written permission and after agreeing with them what can be shown. If the project is under NDA, the customer may not want their name, the molecule or the scale to appear. The alternative is to use data from your own applications lab or to anonymise the case with the customer's input.

## Automated follow-up after the download

This is where automation saves time. When someone downloads a document, the system can later send a related application note or an invitation to the next webinar, and alert sales only when the contact fits your profile. We connect the form, the CRM and the email tool with simple rules your sales team understands and can change.

- The document they asked for, sent straight away with no extra steps.
- A second related piece a few days later, if they agreed to receive emails.
- An alert to sales when the company matches the profile you are after.
- The webinar recording for people who registered but did not attend.
