Why a single equipment campaign does not work

Searches for lab and bioprocess equipment are few and mix very different audiences. A student may search for «bioreactor», and so may a researcher who wants a benchtop unit or a plant preparing a scale-up. If everything goes into one campaign with the same keywords and the same ad, it is hard to tell which part of the budget brings in buyers.

Google rates each keyword with a Quality Score from 1 to 10, based on expected clickthrough rate, ad relevance and landing page experience. It is a diagnostic tool and not an input in the auction, but it flags when the ad and the page do not match what the person is looking for.

Campaigns by application and scale, each with its own page

A structure that is easy to control is one campaign per application or per scale, with ad groups by equipment type. Each ad group leads to a page about the same application and scale as the search, with the data, the available documentation and a short quote request form.

Google offers three match types. Exact gives you the most control and reaches the fewest searches, phrase covers more, and broad reaches related searches even when they lack the exact meaning of the keyword. Google says broad match should be used with Smart Bidding. With only a few leads a month, starting with phrase and exact is the safer choice.

How much budget do we need to start Google Ads for lab equipment?

There is no figure that fits everyone, because it depends on the countries, the competition for each search and how many applications you want to cover. It is more useful to start with one application and one country, look at the cost per qualified lead after a few weeks and then decide whether to expand to other markets or scales.

Bid on searches that signal a quote request

Buying signals are easy to spot. Price, quote, supplier, manufacturer or a specific scale in litres. Study signals are just as clear, such as «what is», «working principle», «types of» or «pdf». The first group goes into the campaigns with the larger budget and the second into a negative keyword list.

In between sit searches with no clear intent, such as the name of a process. They can make sense in a small campaign that leads to a downloadable application note. In that case, measure it by downloads and the contacts that follow, because it rarely turns into a quote request on the same day.

One budget per country and language

If you sell in several countries, split campaigns by country or group of countries, each in its own language. That way you decide how much goes to Germany, the Nordics or Spain, and one market does not eat the others' budget. Google recommends keeping language and location targeting consistent and writing the ads in that language.

For Search, Google recommends the «Presence or interest» option, which also reaches people who have shown interest in the area. It suggests «Presence» when you only want to reach people located there. If you sell through distributors by country, Presence keeps you from paying for clicks in markets someone else covers.

Does the Google Ads healthcare policy affect equipment manufacturers?

The main Healthcare and medicines policy page does not mention lab or bioprocess equipment. Its section on pharmaceutical manufacturers does restrict suppliers of antibodies, peptides and compounds for commercial labs, who may only advertise in Canada and the United States. If your landing pages name prescription drugs, review that policy as well before you launch.

Send CRM-qualified leads back to Google Ads

A submitted form is a long way from an equipment order. If Google Ads only counts forms, automated bidding will chase more forms, including those from students or vendors. To avoid that, import what happens next in your CRM, such as a qualified lead, a quote sent or an order. Google calls this offline conversion import.

Google recommends starting with enhanced conversions for leads, an upgraded version of that import that uses hashed data the user provided, such as an email address. If your CRM uploads through the Google Ads API, since 15 June 2026 those uploads go through the Data Manager API and are blocked in the Google Ads API, so the integration is worth checking.

Do we need a landing page for every campaign?

Each ad group should lead to a page about the same application and scale as the search. Google considers landing page experience when it calculates Quality Score. You do not need a new website, but you do need application pages with data, documentation and a short form to request a quote.

Where to start without wasting budget

Start with one application and one country where you already have a strong page, and expand once you know which leads turn into quotes. At crida studio we run the SEM strategy for PharmaBios Innova, a maker of custom bioreactors and fermenters. Before that, David Monje, founder of crida studio, built B2B funnels with SEO, SEM and automation as marketing director at TECNIC Bioprocess Solutions.

  • Pick one application and one country with a solid landing page.
  • Build the negative keyword list before the campaign goes live.
  • Define in the CRM what a qualified lead is and who marks it.
  • Connect conversion import before switching to automated bidding.
  • Review the search terms report every week during the first month.
