What the figures from 675 Girona accommodation websites say
Most sites analysed invite visitors to book without going through a portal. 487 of 675 (72.1%) have a booking engine or a booking button on the home page, and 73 (10.8%) link to a booking portal such as Booking or Tripadvisor. 515 (76.3%) offer two or more languages. Meanwhile, 103 (15.3%) tell Google through structured data that they are a hotel, a campsite or a rural house.
The basics do not go together. 584 of 675 (86.5%) redirect on their own to HTTPS and 617 (91.4%) adapt to mobile, but 364 (53.9%) have exactly one H1 and 33 (4.9%) pass all six basics at once. The six-basics index, the same one used in the town council website study, averages 4.01.

If your property’s website is one of the 675 we analysed, we’ll send you how it did on each indicator and where we would start.
Ask for your website’s resultHow we measured and what we could not measure
We start from two official sources. The Catalonia Tourism Register, open data from the Generalitat, lists 2,160 accommodation establishments in the province of Girona, not counting tourist-use homes, but has no website field. We took each website from the establishment’s listing on catalunya.com, the Catalan Tourist Board’s website, which covers 1,943 of them (90.0%). 1,301 listings carry their own website, adding up to 1,037 distinct sites because 147 are shared.
A program of ours downloaded the home page of each site on 31 October and 1 November 2026 and read its HTML without running JavaScript, with the same method as the town council study. It analysed 675 of 1,037 (65.1%). Of the other 362, 194 have a domain that does not resolve, 46 answer 403, 39 disallow robots and the other 83 are empty or parked, lead to another platform, do not respond or return an error.
This is neither a census nor an audit. A property may have a website even if its catalunya.com listing shows none, and domains that do not resolve reflect the listing, not the establishment. Whatever a site adds with JavaScript, such as many booking engines and language switchers, is invisible to us, so these figures are minimums. The two indexes are our own criteria for comparing groups, not quality scores. Groups with fewer than 8 sites are not compared.
Can I find out how my property’s website did?
Yes, if you run the establishment. The page and the CSV files only contain aggregates by county, type, category, population band and tourist brand, because the study is not meant to single out any property. Ask us through the contact form and we will explain what we saw on your home page, without publishing it anywhere.
How bookings work on Girona accommodation websites
487 of 675 sites (72.1%) have a booking engine or a direct booking button on the home page. On 196 (29.0%) we identified the engine by name, such as Mirai, Avirato, SiteMinder, Thelis or WitBooking, and on 291 (43.1%) there is an identified engine or a booking subdomain. The other 196 (29.0%) only have a booking button or link, which may lead to an engine loaded with JavaScript or to a contact form.
Booking portals rarely appear on home pages. 73 of 675 (10.8%) link to an OTA, 62 (9.2%) to Tripadvisor and 16 (2.4%) to Booking.com. 13 sites (1.9%) link to a portal and have no engine or button of their own. 379 (56.1%) have WhatsApp or a clickable phone number, and 210 (31.1%) show prices or a date search.
The direct sales index, our own criterion from 0 to 4, gives one point each for a booking engine or button, two or more languages, WhatsApp or a clickable phone number, and prices or a date search. The average is 2.36 and 123 of 675 sites (18.2%) score all four points. By type, over the sites analysed in each, a booking engine or button ranges from 83.2% of campsites to 54.8% of guesthouses.
| Type | Sites analysed | Booking engine or button | Engine identified | Link to an OTA | Direct sales index (0 to 4) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hotel | 273 of 411 | 220 (80.6%) | 93 (34.1%) | 30 (11.0%) | 2.63 |
| Campsite | 95 of 116 | 79 (83.2%) | 33 (34.7%) | 16 (16.8%) | 2.66 |
| Rural tourism | 204 of 331 | 128 (62.7%) | 47 (23.0%) | 16 (7.8%) | 2.09 |
| Guesthouse (hostal or pensió) | 84 of 150 | 46 (54.8%) | 20 (23.8%) | 10 (11.9%) | 1.75 |
| Tourist apartment | 19 of 29 | 14 (73.7%) | 3 (15.8%) | 1 (5.3%) | 2.53 |
| Type of accommodation | Sites with a booking engine or button |
|---|---|
| Campsite (95 sites) | 83.2% |
| Hotel (273 sites) | 80.6% |
| Tourist apartment (19 sites) | 73.7% |
| Rural tourism (204 sites) | 62.7% |
| Guesthouse (84 sites) | 54.8% |
Why is my website not in the study?
Because it only covers the websites shown in the catalunya.com listings of establishments registered in the Tourism Register, excluding tourist-use homes. If the listing has no website, shows an old one or the site keeps robots out, it was not analysed. Hostels and mountain refuges are not included either.
Which languages the sites offer and which they are written in
515 of 675 sites (76.3%) offer two or more languages, counting the language switcher and hreflang tags. Spanish is on 501 (74.2%), English on 479 (71.0%), Catalan on 459 (68.0%), French on 418 (61.9%), German on 161 (23.9%) and Dutch on 90 (13.3%). 415 (61.5%) have hreflang, the tag that tells Google the version for each language.
The home page is declared in Catalan on 315 of 675 sites (46.7%) and in Spanish on 220 (32.6%), and 73 (10.8%) declare no language. On the Costa Brava, 402 of 503 sites (79.9%) offer two or more languages, and in the Pyrenees brand (Pirineus) 110 of 164 (67.1%). By county, that figure runs from 83.2% in the Selva to 63.8% in the Garrotxa, leaving aside Osona, which has only 8 sites.

What does the direct sales index mean?
It is our criterion, from 0 to 4. It gives one point for each thing that helps guests book without a portal, a booking engine or button, two or more languages, WhatsApp or a clickable phone number, and prices or a date search. It does not say whether a site sells well or badly, only how many of these tools are visible.
The technical basics and what Google can read
33 of 675 sites (4.9%) pass all six basics at once, forced HTTPS, viewport, meta description, a single H1, declared language and accessibility link, and 272 (40.3%) pass five or six. The least common indicator is the accessibility link, 42 of 675 (6.2%), followed by the single H1, 192 sites (28.4%) have none and 119 (17.6%) have more than one.
386 of 675 (57.2%) carry structured data (JSON-LD). 103 (15.3% of the 675) use it to say they are a lodging, with a type such as Hotel (63 sites), LodgingBusiness (24) or Campground (21). The most common types are Organization (248), WebSite (243) and BreadcrumbList (196), which describe the website rather than the kind of business.
Compared with the 208 Girona town council websites we analysed in October 2026 with the same method, accommodation sites have more meta descriptions (73.6% against 32.2%) and far more hreflang (61.5% against 3.4%), and fewer accessibility links (6.2% against 77.4%) and fewer six-basics passes (4.9% against 14.4%). The accessibility obligations of a town council and a private company are not the same, and the link is counted only for comparison.
| Category | Sites analysed | Meta description | Lodging JSON-LD | Accessibility link | Six basics |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1-star hotel | 41 | 26 (63.4%) | 6 (14.6%) | 1 (2.4%) | 1 (2.4%) |

| 4-star hotel | 70 | 61 (87.1%) | 23 (32.9%) | 4 (5.7%) | 4 (5.7%) |
| 4-star superior hotel | 19 | 18 (94.7%) | 4 (21.1%) | 1 (5.3%) | 1 (5.3%) |
| 5-star or gran luxe hotel (not compared) | 5 | 4 | 1 | 0 | 0 |
| 2-star campsite | 16 | 13 (81.2%) | 5 (31.2%) | 3 (18.8%) | 2 (12.5%) |
| 3-star campsite | 44 | 34 (77.3%) | 5 (11.4%) | 3 (6.8%) | 2 (4.5%) |
| 4-star campsite | 35 | 30 (85.7%) | 12 (34.3%) | 0 (0.0%) | 0 (0.0%) |
How was each website measured?
With a program that downloads the home page of each site, reads its HTML and looks for a fixed set of indicators, such as the booking engine, the languages, the meta description or the structured data. It does not run JavaScript, identifies itself as crida studio, respects robots.txt and makes at most one request per second to each server.
What an accommodation business can do with this data
The list lets you review your property’s home page with the study’s criteria. Almost everything can be checked by opening the site on a phone and, if needed, the page source, and many items can be fixed from the content management system or from the booking engine. Our guide on rural tourism websites explains how to make direct booking easier.
The aggregates by county, type of accommodation, category, population band (on 1 January 2025, from Municat) and tourist brand can be downloaded as CSV from the links below, with no data on individual establishments, in case you want to compare your group or redo the sums.
- A visible booking button on the home page that leads to the booking engine, not to a contact form.
- Versions in your guests’ languages, each with its hreflang tag.
- A clickable phone number (tel link) or a WhatsApp link, and indicative prices or a date search.
- A meta description with the property’s name, the village and what guests will find.
- A single H1 per page, forced HTTPS, a viewport tag and a lang attribute.
- Structured data (JSON-LD) of type Hotel, Campground, BedAndBreakfast or LodgingBusiness with name, address and phone number.
- An accessibility link, if your company is required to have one.
